When people think about fertility support, the focus is often placed on one partner — usually the woman. The fact is, conception is a shared process. Both partners contribute to the health of an embryo. Both bodies play an important role in creating the conditions needed for pregnancy.
This is one of the reasons many couples begin exploring a more integrative approach. They need one that supports both partners, not just one piece of the puzzle. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offer a way to do exactly that.
Fertility Is a Whole-System Process
From a TCM perspective, fertility isn’t just about ovulation or sperm count. It’s about the overall environment of the body.
For both partners, this includes:
• circulation and blood flow
• hormone signaling
• nervous system regulation
• sleep quality
• stress levels
• digestion and nutrient absorption
When these systems are supported, the body is better able to function optimally — including reproductive function.
Why Supporting Both Partners Matters
Even in conventional medicine, we know that:
• egg quality matters
• sperm quality matters
• timing matters
• overall health matters
Sperm health alone accounts for a significant percentage of fertility challenges, yet it’s often under-addressed.
Supporting both partners can:
• improve overall outcomes
• reduce pressure on one partner
• create a more balanced, shared approach to the process
It also helps couples feel like they are in this together, rather than navigating separate experiences. Imagine how much differently you would feel running at a challenge solo vs. together with the person you love.
Supporting Same-Sex Couples on the Fertility Journey
Fertility journeys don’t look the same for every couple — and they’re not meant to.
For same-sex couples, the path to conception often involves additional layers of planning, coordination, and medical support. Whether you’re pursuing donor sperm, IUI, IVF, reciprocal IVF, or surrogacy, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine can offer supportive, individualized care along the way.
For the partner who will be carrying a pregnancy, acupuncture may help support:
• cycle regulation and ovulation
• uterine lining development
• hormone balance
• preparation for IUI or IVF
• nervous system regulation during treatment
For couples where both partners are involved in the process — such as reciprocal IVF — care can be tailored to support each person’s unique role, whether that’s egg retrieval, embryo transfer, or overall reproductive health.
Even when only one partner is physically undergoing treatment, both partners are part of the experience. The emotional, mental, and logistical aspects of fertility can be significant, and having consistent support can make a meaningful difference.
Acupuncture can also offer:
• stress and emotional support throughout the process
• space to feel grounded during decision-making
• support before, during, and after procedures
Every fertility journey is different, and care should reflect that. The goal is always to provide thoughtful, personalized support that meets you where you are — while working alongside your medical care team.
How Acupuncture Supports Fertility
Acupuncture is increasingly being recommended by healthcare providers for fertility care. It is one of few single modalities that has the ability to support multiple systems at once.
For both partners, treatments may help:
• improve blood flow to reproductive organs
• regulate the nervous system
• support hormone balance
• reduce stress and anxiety
• improve sleep quality
Many patients describe feeling more grounded, regulated, and supported — which is especially important during what is often an emotionally and physically intense process.
Supporting Female Fertility
For women, acupuncture and TCM are often used to support:
• regular ovulation
• healthy menstrual cycles
• uterine lining development
• hormone balance
• stress regulation
Care is typically tailored to the phase of the cycle, with treatments shifting throughout the month to support the body’s natural rhythm.
Supporting Male Fertility
Male fertility is just as important — and often more responsive to lifestyle and physiological changes. Acupuncture and TCM may help support:
• sperm count and motility
• circulation to the reproductive organs
• hormone balance
• stress reduction
Because sperm development typically takes approximately 2.5-3 months, consistent support over time can be especially impactful. This is why I typically recommend both the female and male partner receive weekly acupuncture for 3 full cycles. If pregnancy occurs before the end of that time period, wonderful! If not, then we are working to create a healthy platform to encourage conception.
Acupuncture for IUI and IVF
More and more fertility clinics are recommending acupuncture as an adjunctive therapy with their treatment plans — and for good reason. A properly trained acupuncturist can support both partners throughout every step of the process. The acupuncture treatment itself will change week-to-week depending on your specific fertility protocol.
Before Treatment
In the weeks or months leading up to IUI or IVF, acupuncture may help:
• regulate cycles
• support hormone balance
• improve blood flow to the uterus and ovaries
• reduce stress and anxiety
This phase is often about preparing the body and creating a more supportive internal environment.
During Treatment
During an IUI or IVF cycle, treatments are often timed strategically. When used properly, acupuncture can:
• support response to medications and reduce unwanted side effects
• promote circulation and reduce inflammation
• reduce stress during procedures
• support implantation
Most protocols include treatments before and after embryo transfer as part of an integrative care approach. I typically recommend pre-transfer and post-transfer acupuncture sessions as close as possible to the transfer itself. Same day if possible, otherwise within 24 hours.
After Treatment
After IUI or embryo transfer, the focus shifts to:
• supporting the luteal phase
• maintaining a calm, regulated nervous system
• supporting early pregnancy
I often simply tell women “Now we treat your body as if it is already pregnant”, because that’s the goal! This period can feel emotionally intense. Your body is often still reacting to the hormones from your treatment protocol, and if you become pregnant, you have a surge of new hormones. Feelings of anxiousness and confusion tend to peak during this time. This is because we typically can’t feel it the moment we get pregnant. We are nervous about doing something wrong without realizing it. We constantly turn to google: “Is it gas or a sign of pregnancy”. Having consistent support, acupuncture to calm your squirrely mind, even just someone to check in with, can make a meaningful difference.
A Collaborative Approach
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine are not meant to replace fertility treatments. Instead, they work best as part of an integrative care model. Many patients use acupuncture alongside:
• OB/GYN care
• fertility specialists
• IVF and IUI protocols
• nutritional support
• mental health support
This collaborative approach allows each modality to support the others. For couples, this might mean:
• both partners receiving acupuncture treatments
• incorporating herbal support when appropriate
• making small lifestyle adjustments over time
• creating a shared plan that feels supportive, not overwhelming
Having this integration between multiple aspects of healthcare ensures that you feel thoroughly supported. It also reduces the risk of things falling through the cracks, especially when your providers are able to communicate with each other.
Final Thoughts
Fertility journeys can feel complex, emotional, and at times, isolating. I am intimately familiar with this rollercoaster of emotions. But you don’t have to approach it from just one angle.
Supporting both partners — physically, emotionally, and systemically — can create a more balanced and supported experience. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine offer a way to step back, look at the full picture, and support the body in a way that feels both grounded and intentional.
